Critically, not everything that matters in an industry is readable by AI.
Much of what defines real‑world practice lives in:

- judgement formed on site
- unwritten trade‑offs and constraints
- context shared verbally, not documented formally
If this knowledge is not deliberately translated into forms that can be understood — without being oversimplified — it is effectively invisible to AI systems.
A further, often overlooked issue is accessibility. Large volumes of industry knowledge are currently locked inside:
- flipbooks and page‑turning PDFs

From an AI perspective, this content may as well not exist.

As a result, some of the most authoritative, carefully prepared industry material is invisible to the systems increasingly shaping understanding and decision‑making.
Unless industry knowledge is clearly framed, complexity is lost by default.
This is why stewardship in the AI age cannot be a solo effort.
No single organisation, board, or expert holds the full picture of industry reality. What AI systems learn — and therefore what policymakers, markets, and the public come to believe — is shaped by the collective body of information that exists.
Ensuring that AI understanding reflects reality requires crowdsourced stewardship: a shared commitment by industry participants to contribute accurate, contextual, experience‑based knowledge rather than leaving the narrative to fragmented or outdated sources.

- Is industry knowledge being represented with sufficient context?
- Are critical trade‑offs and constraints visible, or assumed?
- Where could simplification create policy or reputational risk?
- Is the association positioned as a trusted reference point when understanding is mediated by machines?
These are questions of oversight, continuity, and risk management that define effective leadership in industry associations.
They sit squarely with boards and senior leadership.
Why This Framing Relieves Pressure
This perspective helps boards because it:
- Removes the false urgency to “do something about AI”
- Avoids premature technology commitments
- Grounds discussion in mandate and responsibility
- Reasserts the association’s role as a stabilising institution
Boards are not being asked to chase innovation.
They are being asked to hold the line on trust — under new informational conditions.
The Core Reality
AI does not understand industries on its own — and it cannot read everything that matters.
It learns from what people collectively publish, repeat, and structure — while ignoring what remains implicit, experiential, or undocumented.
The medium through which industry knowledge is interpreted has changed.
